RESCHEDULED CONCERTS: SWR SYMPHONIEORCHESTER

„He and the orchestra are a single being.‟ (Stuttgarter Zeitung, 19. Januar 2018)

Since Teodor Currentzis was named Principal Conductor of the SWR Symphonieorchesters in 2018, his goal has been to help this young orchestra achieve a unique artistic identity with moving interpretations and an innovative outreach program. In February 2020, Currentzis and the orchestra will perform together for the first time in the Berlin Philharmonie. The concert was originally scheduled for September 2019, but unfortunately had to be postponed. The program will include Tod und Verklärung by Richard Strauss as well as Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 1.

Hommage TO Gidon Kremer

„With the homage to Gidon Kremer we honor this season one of the greatest violinists of our time.“ (Konzerthaus Berlin)

The homage to Gidon Kremer, which the Konzerthaus Berlin organises  at the end of October, comprises eleven days: concerts for a large orchestra, chamber music, late-night and children’s concerts, presented by a large number of renowned artists, and, of course,  Gidon Kremer with his Kremerata Baltica himself. The repertoire ranges from Bach to Weinberg and shows the broad spectrum of the string orchestra, that Gidon Kremer founded more than 20 years ago.

This year, Kremerata and its artistic director dedicate a large number of their programs to the memory of the Polish composer Mieczyslaw Weinberg, whose birthday marks the 100th anniversary in December 2019. Among other things, Gidon Kremer conceived the multimedia project “Chronicles of Current Events”, in which music for the chamber orchestra, chamber music and solo works, as well as film music written by Weinberg, are combined with the video art of Valery Pecheykin, Artyom Firsanov and Daniil Orlov. The world premiere took place during this year’s Holland Festival, followed by performances in Berlin and Hamburg.

DA PONTE CYCLE OF MUSICAETERNA

The Da Ponte cycle of Teodor Currentzis and musicAeterna, which was released at Sony Classical between 2014 and 2017, has been one of the cornerstones of the worldwide attention that the ensemble and its still polarizing principal conductor have been receiving for years: “Everyone gives everything: a Don Giovanni for eternity”, Werner Theurich enthused at the time in the German news magazine Spiegel, while Markus Thiel heard more “dressage” as interpretation in the Münchner Merkur. Since then, musicAeterna and Teodor Currentzis have gained a unique reputation in the international classical world in many concerts in the most important halls of Europe with a versatile repertoire, with highly idiosyncratic interpretations, but in any case with a captivating enthusiasm. Now they return with their Da Ponte cycle to the Bremen Music Festival, to the Konzerthaus Vienna and to the LUCERNE FESTIVA, where the visitors can not only look forward to the three operas, but also to an evening with arias from Idomeneo, presented by one of the most famous Mozart interpreters in the world: Cecilia Bartoli.

DANCING QUEEN AND FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE

Commissioned productions for period instruments, new interpretations of traditional repertoires, innovative working methods, dramaturgically sophisticated concepts that attract a diverse audience – Finnish Baroque Orchestra (FiBO) offers all of this and has been one of the musical greats in the cultural life of the Nordic countries for 30 years.

The “Dancing Queen” program presented at the festival in Herrenchiemsee musically illustrates the life of the Swedish queen Christine (1626 – 1689) as a monarch, but above all as a music lover and generous patron. The dramaturgical range spans from a coronation motet and French ballet music  to the musical framing of courtly celebrations, a sinfonia by Antonio Cesti to her Catholic baptism to works by Scarlatti and Corelli, both of which were sponsored by the monarch.

In August 2019, FiBO presents “From Russia with Love” at the Brühl Castle Concerts. The program traces the intense musical relationship between Russia and Western Europe in the 18th century. Czarina Catherine the Great did her utmost to promote the arts in the still-new Saint Petersburg Residence and invited numerous Italian composers to the court, among them some of the greatest composers of her time, Giovanni Pasiello, Domenico Cimarosa and Baldasare Galuppi. On the occasion of a European trip, the czarina on Christmas day in 1781 attended the premiere of Haydn’s String Quartet op. 33 at the Vienna Court – a work that is indispensable in this context, even at a summer festival.

MUSICSUMMER WITHOUT LIMITS

The Summer of Music 2019 takes us beyond Europe’s borders:

„Il Giardino Armonico performed Joseph Haydn’s score with a lot of plasticity and empathy“, judged the Wiener Zeitung about the interpretation of Joseph Haydn’s Creation by  Giovanni Antonini and his ensemble Il Giardino Armonico. After successful performances in Munich, Augsburg and Vienna the production will be performed at the Soli Deo Gloria Festival and the  Rheingau Music Festival at the end of June.

Gidon Kremer and Kremerata Baltica commemorate the 100th birthday of Mieczylaw Weinberg with a premiere at the Holland Festival.

After their successful German debut last February the Aga Khan Music Initiative presents the program „New Music from both ends of the Silk Route“ at the Mosel Music Festival.

Beethoven-Expertise:  Chamber Orchestra of Europe (COE) and Rudolf Buchbinder present Beethoven’s piano concertos 1 and 5 at the Bremen Music Festival.

IL GIARDINO ARMONICO WITH HAYDN’S »CREATION«

„The interesting thing is that with »The Creation« the classic Haydn composed a pioneering piece.“ (Giovanni Antonini)

Since 2014, Giovanni Antonini and Il Giardino Armonico have been exploring the symphonic work of Joseph Haydn as part of the Haydn2032 project. This intense commitment has led the orchestra and the conductor to Haydn’s most important vocal work, in which the Austrian composer consciously breaks with the Italian oratorio tradition and assigns the chorus a much more prominent role, thus establishing the choral oratorio as an independent special form of the genre. The success of The Creation was unprecedented since its premiere in Vienna in 1798. The work was the occasion for the founding of new choir associations, as well as music institutes, and helped to develop an independent German oratory school. With the engagement of Anna Lucia Richter, Maximilian Schmitt, Florian Boesch and the Bavarian Radio Chorus, Giovanni Antonini and his ensemble are supported by congenial partners.
